With the season on the line, the Yankees have indeed made some roster changes.
But they may not be the ones fans wanted or expected.
Aaron Boone assigned Jazz Chisholm as a cleanup hitter, moving Giancarlo Stanton — the team’s hottest hitter — to fifth for Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night.
Austin Wells was also reinserted as the starting catcher, moving up to eighth in the order.
Aaron Judge, whose struggles have been widely publicized throughout the playoffs, still sits in third place.
The Dodgers, down 3-0 in the series, stage a “Johnny Wholestaff” game against the Yankees, using right reliever Ben Casparius as their opener.
“I’m really just trying to be a little more balanced with them on a day in the bullpen,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of the lineup moves. “And that’s more in line with what I’ve been doing all year, like let’s say we’re facing a right-handed pitcher, it’s kind of rolling out.”
Ultimately, Boone said, it was about trying to expose matchups against the Dodgers.
Boone also said he considered moving Judge up to the No. 1 spot, but was hesitant to do so with Gleyber Torres thriving at the top of the lineup.
